Week 1

Welcome to Mrs. Langham's class! I enjoyed meeting everyone at Kindergarten orientation. I hope that it helped to inform you about what to expect in Kindergarten this year. Please feel free to e-mail me at any time with any questions you might have.

I really have enjoyed the first few days of school. All of the children get along very well together and it is the best start of any school year that I have had. They are all so eager to learn and excited to be at school. I have high hopes and expectations for this class.

We have been busy learning about routines and procedures at school. We have used stories about bears to help them learn how to use their school supplies. On Monday, we learned how to use crayons. On Tuesday, we learned how to use glue and learned how to make "Jesse Bear dots" after reading Better Not Get Wet Jesse Bear. On Wednesday we learned how to use our scissors. We learned about rules at school with a story called "The Monster Who Went to School." Of course, all of the children didn't want to act like the monster in the story. We brainstormed a list of good behavior in our classroom and applied them to the Hill Agreements. We also enjoyed the No David books and made a No David puppet. On Thursday, we learned how to use our markers. We learned a song to remind us "Put the lid back on the marker, until it goes click". We read the book, Moonbear's Skyfire and drew an illustration from the story with our markers. On Friday, we read the book, Corduroy and also made our own Corduroy bears using crayon rubbings. We also read the book Words are Not for Hurting and made a list of loving words and hurtful words. We put the hurtful words on a heart and crumpled it up to repesent how those words hurt our feelings. Other book we read this week included Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? and Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear?

In math, we have learned how to use and explore our math manipulatives.

I do not have nappers this year, so I am going to experiment with our nap time next week and try to do science in place of rest time. Our special areas time got moved up and is now from 12:15-1:00. We will do science and social studies after lunch now until it is time for special areas. If this does not work out, we will try something different.

Speaking of special areas, we started our day on Monday with Music with our teacher Ms. Schiele, we had art on Tuesday with Ms. Worsham and PE on Wednesday with Ms. Sheppard. We will continue with this rotation of music, art and PE throughout the year. It helps me to remember it with the acronym MAP (M for music, A for art and P for PE). We are scheduled for PE next Monday again.

Please enjoy the pictures from the first week of school below.
