Week 21

Just when I say it can't get any busier in Kindergarten, it does. This was one of the busiest weeks of the year so far. So much was going on. Let's take a look at some of the fun things happening in Mrs. Langham's room.

We had two letters to learn this week. We learned the letter Dd with the help of Daisy Doll and also the letter Rr with the help of Rowdy the Rodeo Rat.

Our sight words this week were "for" and "you". The kids enjoyed singing these sight words. The focus book of the week was Bus Stops.

We learned a new step in writing and began the process of publishing books. We learned how to extend a small moment out into pages and to add detail. This is a quick example I showed the children about how I woke up hungry, drove to HEB, bought groceries and made spaghetti. The students practiced illustrating their stories one day and then adding words the next.

In science, we focused on the science fair. We did a blubber experiment where the children tested whether a blubber filled bag helped to keep their hand warm in the ice. Just had to share all of the children who participated. Aren't they precious? They just couldn't wait to try this experiment.

We also extended our rock learning. Metamorphic rocks are made from pressure and heat inside of the Earth. We used our rock (ahem... Snickers) and added pressure by smashing and stomping on it. Mrs. Langham even added heat to one in the microwave.

In math, we started a new concept, Number of the Week. We randomly chose a number to review. This week we reviewed the number 6. The students represented the number in many different ways and went to 5 different centers to help them delve deeper into the understanding of number concepts and skills (counting, cardinality, quantity).

We had a big celebration this week....the 100th day of Kindergarten! We literally started our day off with a bang. We popped over 100 balloons in the gymnasium with the rest of our kindergarten friends.

We read several books about the 100th day of school.

We made crowns and we were visited by Zero the Hero and learned that the 100th day of school is his favorite day of the year.

We drew pictures of what we would look like when we are 100 years old. Then we crumpled them up to add wrinkles.

We made 100 fingerprints.

We made 100 dots using bingo dabbers.

But I think our favorite thing was making our 100 day snack and eating it.

We had fun celebrating the 101st day of school Dalmatian style.

We enjoyed putting 101 dots on our Dalmatian dogs. We bundled 10 groups of 10 and the 101st dot was the eye.

We also learned about Groundhog's Day. This concept seems very strange to us, especially since the groundhog predicted 6 more weeks of winter and it is so warm in Texas.
