Week 24

I hope that you enjoyed your long weekend. It was nice to see so many parents come to our student-led showcase on Wednesday. I hope that you got to see all of the neat stuff that your child is learning daily. I know they loved having you come.

In language arts, we had two letters to learn this week. We learned the letter Bb with the help of Benjamin Bunny.

We also learned the letter Ll with the help of Larry Lion.

Our focus book this week was In the Yard and our sight words were "and" and "what".

We worked on retelling stories using this graphic organizer, Somebody, Wanted, But, So. We filled it in by retelling a familiar story of the Three Little Pigs.

We began learning about President's by reading the following book.

We read books about George Washington, our first president, and learned that he is on the quarter and one dollar bill.

We also learned about Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, and learned that he is on the penny and five dollar bill.

We had fun making a flip craft of these two presidents.

In math, we finished up our fractions unit by making a fractions book. We divided a cookie for two, three and four people and wrote the respective fraction for each representation.

We also began a unit on 3D shapes. We learned the names of the shapes after reading this book. We learned about the cube, sphere, rectangular prism, cylinder, cone and pyramid. We will be studying each individual shape in further depth next week.

We took what we learned and explored 3D shapes then we made some of our own with playdoh and pentominoes. Important terminology for 3D shapes include faces, edges and vertices.

In science, we continued talking about water. We discussed water pollution and we did an experiment. Here is our imaginary pet, Frankie the Fish in his clean water.

We read a story about Frankie the Fish and as he traveled down the river, he ran into many different types of water pollution. We polluted his water with things as can be seen in the pictures below. Each picture made Frankie's environment progressively worse. At the end, one child said "I'm going to say a prayer for Frankie". So cute!!!! I think they understand the importance of trying to keep our resources clean and the dangers it can cause to our environment. We also discussed water conservation and watched a movie about reducing, recycling and reusing.

After doing the experiment with Frankie, we made a list of things that cause water pollution and wrote about them in our science journals.

Friday was a fun day. We got to dress up like super heroes.

We also got to attend a West African Drum assembly. Here is a short video clip from our assembly. Sorry for the poor quality as I shot it from my phone. The children really enjoyed watching and participating in this.

I hope you are able to join us for the book fair next week. Remember our class has a special time to shop for books on Wednesday at 8AM. If you are unable to join us, there will be helpers in the library to assist your child is choosing books that are just right for them. Please be sure to send a labeled envelope (name and $ amount) for the book fair if you do not plan on attending the book fair with your child.
