Week 9

Week 9 was all about pumpkins. We read many books to learn about pumpkins and created a KWL chart with our learning. We learned about the pumpkin life cycle and the parts of a pumpkin. We created a craft that is posted outside of our door diagramming the parts of a pumpkin. The best part was opening our pumpkins and looking inside.

In reading, we learned about characters. We read several books and identified the characters. They can be people, animals or things. We enjoyed listening to a story read by Horacio's dad. Thank you for coming to our classroom to read. We are always looking for parent volunteers, so if you are interested in helping in any way, please email me or one of our room moms.

In math, we began our learning of 3D shapes. We explored cubes, spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms and pyramids. We had fun creating these shapes with magna tiles, play-doh, Tinker Toys and much more.

In social studies, we learned about the holiday, Diwali. Happy Diwali to those that are celebrating!

We are working on cooperating and we did a table activity where we had to cooperate with our neighbors to put puzzles together. This was so much fun.

Congratulations to Sarah and Kevin who were chosen as my Key Stallions this month.

Week 7 & 8

I want to thank everyone for coming to parent conferences. It was nice talking to you about your wonderful children and how they are progressing in kindergarten. Thank you for investing in your child by supporting our learning at home. Please remember to read 15 minutes each day and to practice their sight words.

Kindergarten has been very busy these last 2 weeks. In reading, we have begun reader's workshop. The students have books on their level in their book boxes while I have begun to pull students for small group instruction. They are practicing reading these books by looking at pictures, retelling the story or reading the words. We have been learning all about apples and fall.

In science, we have learning about sources of energy such as heat, light and sound. We have identified what are examples of each and why energy is important. We also began learning about magnets. We learned that things with iron stick to magnets. We learned the words attract and repel and learned that magnets create forces which move things.

In math, we worked with sorting attribute blocks in more than one way. We have been graphing. We have also been working on what number comes before and after a given number. We are practicing counting to 100 and learning those tricky tens.

Please remember to print and return the class t-shirt order form by this Wednesday along with $7.50 for your child's shirt. Sorry for the quick turn-around. The printer needed our order quicker than we thought. Also, please remember to send a pumpkin with your child on Monday for science.
