This week, we learned about community helpers. We started out by learning about neighborhoods and places in our community. Then we began to discuss the roles and tools of community helpers. We read several books about them and finished our week with visits from many parents who are community helpers. We loved learning about their jobs.
We got to visit the Innovation Station for the first time this week. This will easily become a class favorite. We get to visit twice a month. We had fun painting, make race tracks, coding and playing with puppets. We are already looking forward to going back.
In math, we began a unit on sorting and classifying. We are sorting objects by more than one attribute (color, size, shape).
We also learned how to login to the Chromebooks this week. We are excited to get a chance to get on these weekly.
Our sight words this week were "to" and "the". Please make sure your child knows all of the sight words we have learned. These can be found in the weekly newsletter. If they do not know they, please make flashcards at home. Also, for those students that do not know letters and sounds, please do the same. The expectation is that your student is reading 15 minutes a day. Please make use of Raz Kids or Teach Your Monster to Read. Of course, traditional paper books are a great choice too.
Our Donors Choose art center came in, so the students have been enjoying being creative during choice time.
Parents, please make sure you are signing up for Remind so that you can get information about our class parties, field trips and other exciting things that are happening. This is the ONLY way that you will learn about these exciting events, so it is very important to sign up. Here is a note explaining how to do so.
I hope you have a fabulous weekend. Our library day will be Monday due to class pictures, so don't forget to put your child's library book in their backpacks.

Week 5
This week, we read many books about colors such as Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Mouse Paint, A Bad Case of Stripes, The Mixed Up Chameleon and Elmer. We practiced blending primary colors to make secondary colors. We also practiced retelling stories. Our sight words this week were "am" and "go". We also read from our book boxes. We worked on writing our "frog jump" letters.
In math, we finished up our unit on numbers 1-10. We put numbers in order. We compared sets and determined which set had more and which set had less. We practiced what comes before and after each number and we practiced writing our numbers.
In science, we worked on physical properties of matter. We learned that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. We made a chart to help us use physical properties to describe matter. We also sorted matter by physical properties.
Our puzzles from Donors Choose came in this week and we enjoyed playing with them during choice time.

Week 4
This week, we learned many nursery rhymes. We made a Humpty Dumpty craft that is hanging in our hallway and we put many of the rhymes into our poetry notebook.
We continued learning about the 5 senses this week in science. We had a lot of fun exploring the sound jars and tasting different items (bitter, sour, salty and sweet).
We are working on our numbers from 6-10 in math. Students need to be able to make sets, count objects, identify the number and number word. They also need to know what comes before and after each number. We will continue our numbers from 6-10 next week too.
We are learning how to add detail to pictures. We learned how to make people and add background. We learned how to label objects by stretching out words. Some students are even writing sentences. We are continuing to learn sounds from the alphabet. Our sight words this week were "me" and "we".
